When to Use Coravin & Vacuum Pumps

Coravin is real magic — for some people. Coravin uses a thin needle that goes through the cork, extracts wine, and replaces it with argon gas. The wine never touches air — the cork seals itself when the needle is removed. Wine can stay drinkable for months.

Coravin costs $200–500 depending on model. Worth it for: people who open expensive bottles by the glass · sommeliers · anyone with a serious cellar. Not worth it for: casual drinkers who finish bottles in 2 days · screw-cap wines (the needle can't penetrate metal).

Vacuum pumps ($15) are cheaper and work for everyone. They extend wine life by 1–2 days. Less dramatic than Coravin, but the price-performance ratio is excellent. Don't use on sparkling — they actively destroy bubbles.
